Stay safe while you meet people
Most people here are looking for honest company. A few are not. These habits protect you.
Money and personal details
- Never send money, gift cards, crypto or "investment" to someone you have not met in person. This is the most common trick, and older adults are targeted most.
- Never share an OTP, card number, bank login, Aadhaar or PAN number in a chat.
- If someone has an emergency that needs your money, stop. Report them instead.
Before you meet
- Talk on chat first, then use a video call. A person who always has an excuse to avoid video is a warning sign.
- The green tick means a selfie was sent and compared with the profile photo by our team, or automatically if nobody looked within 6 hours. It is not a background check. Trust your own judgement too.
- Share your location only with someone you trust. Meet in a public place, never at your home or theirs.
- Do not open files from someone you do not know well. Never install anything a chat partner sends.
- Meet in a public place, in daytime, for the first time. Tell a friend or family member where you are going.
- Arrange your own transport. Do not accept a pick-up from someone you just met.
On video calls
- A video call starts only after you tap Allow. You can end it at any moment.
- Remember that the other person can take a screenshot or record. Do not show anything you would not want shared.
- Nudity is not allowed on Mitr. Report anyone who shows or asks for it.
Report and block
- Use the menu in any chat to block or report. Blocking is instant and private.
- If someone is in danger, or you are being blackmailed, contact the police (112) and the national cyber crime helpline (1930), or report on cybercrime.gov.in.
